As President
of the CA Junior Association, I would like to take this opportunity
to thank all the Holstein enthusiasts who joined together in Sacramento,
CA for the National Convention.
I think it is safe to say a great time was had by all. The best part
for me personally was the fact that on Tuesday CA Senior's went into
the Semi-finals undefeated to face Iowa.
Iowa beat us fair and square...twice to take the National Championship
Title! And the very next day nearly all of the Iowa kids, coaches and
parents along with kids from VT and NY came over to my neck
of the woods in Sonoma County.
We visited Ocean View Farms, a small cheese operation in Valley Ford
and we all had a blast in the Redwood Forest.
We made a four story pyramid at the Pacific
Ocean and we ended the day with a great BBQ for 80+ people with
a long list of new friendships. I enjoyed watching kids eat BBQ'd oysters
for the very first time!
I would also like to thank the entire Convention Committee and everyone who
helped with the 2009 National Holstein Convention. A big thank you
to all the Junior Competitors and all of the coaches for putting in
the study time and bringing your 'game face' for a tight race in all
the divisions. Thank you for coming excited and wanting to have fun
at all of the Junior activities and we certainly look forward to 2010
in Minnesota!
Respectfully submitted,
Rocco Cunningham |

| The California
Junior Holstein Association would like to thank the California
National Holstein Convention Committee for all they did
to make such a wonderful and memorable convention for all. Our California
Juniors accomplished a great deal at the convention, along with many
other accomplishments attained by other Junior Members from across the
United States. This does not happen without the hard work and dedication
of a group of people that come together with the common goal of making
a wonderful National Holstein Convention. The California Juniors would
also like to that the National Convention Junior Chairmen, Jon & Tami
Tollenaar for all the great activities they organized! Finally, thank-you
to Kelly Dunklee and the Holstein Foundation for making the contests
happen! It is because of these contests that Junior Members from across
the United States stay interested and engaged in the Dairy Industry! |

CONVENTION WRAP UP STATEMENT
Kirsten Areias, Junior Advisor, California Holstein Association |
They are the
future of the dairy industry, and in particular the Holstein Association.
Yes, they get together to compete, and some of those competitions are
heated and emotional. But when it is all said and done they are all better
for having prepared and experienced these competitions. They gain a tremendous
amount of dairy/Holstein knowledge in their preparations, they obtain
life skills by putting themselves out there in competition, and as a
result they gain friends from all over the U.S..... friends that down
the road will bond with a common cause of keeping the Holstein Cow and
the Dairy Industry on track during the good times and bad. They truly
are our future, and what a bright future I see!
I would like to express my gratitude to the California Junior Holstein Members,
and especially the National Competitors from California, for making me so proud
to be among you and teach you all I can about such a wonderful industry! |

63 enthusiastic Cow kids descended on Cal Poly in San Luis Obispo from July 9-11 for Cow Camp 2009. After settling into the dormitories, campers traveled to the Dairy Unit for educational sessions. Dr. Stan Henderson guided them through the Holstein USA website in the Computer Lab to track lineage on their favorite cows and learn how to use the inbreeding calculator available through the Holstein website. Dr. Berning gave a cheese-making demonstration while treating the kids to ice cream, and Rick Silacci, herdsman for the Cal Poly Dairy, showed campers untra-sound technology on live heifers at the Dairy Unit. Friday was the Dairy Judging Contest. Cow Campers judged 6 classses of Holsteins and Jerseys. After a day of judging and a fitting demonstration, the California kids boarded a bus for the beach! Cow Campers had fun in the sun at Avila Beach, complete with a Bon-fire, BBQ and smores! The final day of Cow Camp 2009 tested Cow Campers knowledge with a few rounds of Dairy Jeopardy, and then heated competition at Mustang Lanes where campers tested their bowling abilities! The California Junior Holstein Association would like to thank Dr. Stan Henderson and Cal Poly for making Cow Camp possible, and for the generous donations from American Ag Credit, California Holstein Association, Brown Swiss Breeders, the Holstein World and Ruann Dairy (via a fundraising effort with the CA Holstein Annual) to help make Cow Camp affordable to those that attended!
